Save King George Hospital
Redbridge Labour councillors, together with Ilford South MP, Mike Gapes, are mounting a joint campaign to "Save King George Hospital". King George's is under threat of being down-graded from a District General Hospital with a wide range of facilities including an accident and emergency department, to a much smaller facility providing only outpatient ambulatory care alongside an Independent Sector Treatment Centre doing routine elective operations.

"The population of Redbridge has increased from 226,000 in 1991 to 239,000 in 2001, and is set to rise by a further 14,000 by 2010 - any proposal to down-grade the services provided at King George Hospital is ludicrous. We hope that all Redbridge residents will support our campaign and sign our petition."
Cllr Elaine Norman, Leader of Redbridge Labour Group.

"The plans are based on unrealistic assumptions and rigged surveys, and take no account of the fact that large numbers of my constituents do not drive and would have great difficulty travelling to Romford or Whipps Cross. The plans ignore the huge population growth expected in the Thames Gateway. They have picked on the Redbridge, Havering, Barking and Dagenham area as a guinea pig for a mad experiment whilst leaving neighbouring Boroughs untouched. I hope we can stop this stupidity before it goes any further."
